What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your brand mentioned, cited, and recommended by AI answer engines — like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity — when people ask questions in your market. Where SEO optimizes for ranking links on a search results page, AEO optimizes for being the answer the AI gives.

Buyers increasingly ask an AI engine — not a search box — "what's the best tool for X?" or "who should I use for Y?" If the AI doesn't mention you, you're invisible at the exact moment of decision. AEO is how you change that. This page explains what AEO is, how it differs from SEO, how AI engines decide what to cite, and how to improve your own AI visibility.

The short definition

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — the discipline of earning mentions, citations, and recommendations inside the answers that AI engines generate. The "answer engine" is any AI that synthesizes a direct response instead of returning a list of links: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Google AI Overviews, Mistral, and DeepSeek. AEO is sometimes called AI visibility, generative engine optimization (GEO), or LLM optimization — same goal: be present in the AI's answer.

SEO asked, "how do I rank on the results page?" AEO asks, "when an AI answers my buyer's question, is my brand in the answer — and is what it says accurate?" Both matter, but the surface has shifted: a growing share of high-intent questions never reach a traditional results page at all.

How is AEO different from SEO?

They share roots — quality content, structured data, and authority help both — but the target is different. SEO competes for a clickable rank; AEO competes to be inside a synthesized answer where there's often no list and no click.

AEO doesn't replace SEO — much of the groundwork (crawlable content, schema, a credible link profile) feeds both. But optimizing only for the results page leaves you absent from the answer, which is where more and more decisions now happen.

How do AI engines decide what to cite?

There's no single algorithm — but AI engines fall into three broad camps, and the right play depends on which camp you're trying to win:

Because the engines disagree, a brand can be strong in ChatGPT and invisible in Perplexity. That's why AEO is measured across every engine, not just one.

Which AI engines matter for AEO?

The eight that drive the bulk of AI answers today — the set AEO Owl audits against:

ChatGPT · Claude · Gemini · Perplexity · Grok · Google AI Overviews · Mistral · DeepSeek.

Each has different training data, retrieval behavior, and biases, so your visibility varies engine to engine. Measuring all of them is the only way to see your true AI footprint. See how each engine works →

How do you measure AI visibility?

You can't improve what you don't measure. Measuring AI visibility means asking the AI engines the real questions your buyers ask and recording what they say about you and your competitors:

Because AI engines are noisy (the same question can yield different answers), each question is repeated and the engines that couldn't answer are excluded rather than scored as a miss. AEO Owl rolls this into a deterministic 0–10 AI Visibility Score plus an AEO Readiness Score that grades the inputs you control. Read the full methodology →

How do you improve your AEO?

Improving AI visibility works on three layers — the same three AEO Owl scores as AEO Readiness:

The fastest path: measure, fix the highest-impact gaps first, then re-measure. Per-engine tactics live in our Engine Playbooks, each with a 30-day checklist.

AEO, in short

Is AEO the same as GEO or AI visibility?

Effectively yes. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), LLM optimization, and "AI visibility" all describe the same goal: being present, accurate, and recommended in the answers AI engines generate. We use AEO because the unit that matters is the answer.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No — it extends it. The technical and authority groundwork overlaps, but AEO adds a new target (the synthesized answer) and a new scoreboard (citation rate and share of voice across engines, not just rankings).

How fast does AEO work?

Technical fixes (unblocking crawlers, schema) can surface in weeks. Content and authority changes take longer — engines need time to re-retrieve or, for training-data models, to ingest your presence on trusted sources. Monthly measurement is the right cadence.
